Description

According to Kennerton, the primary objective of a headphone system is to facilitate accurate, realistic sounding playback of the input signal. The pursuit of this objective involves overcoming many engineering challenges and Kennerton have made no compromises.

Welcome to the remarkable Thekk, a favourite for audiophiles and professionals around the world. This headphone truly evolves the design of the planar magnetic driver incorporating an extremely open design with the objective of making the headphones sonically disappear so all that remains is pure music.

Kennerton invested in designing and manufacturing their own driver from scratch and spent years not only building prototypes to test their technologies but also inviting listening feedback from many trusted audiophiles to ensure that the sound achieved had an organic, enjoyable presentation.

Structurally, the Thekk incorporates aerospace grade aluminium and steel with high quality wooden ear-cups.
In terms of comfort, they pamper the listener with a strap-style headband which allows even weight distribution over the user’s head, fine lambskin leather and soft ear pads that create a comfortable listening experience.

One of the reasons audiophiles keep coming back to Kennerton is the sublime woodwork craftmanship that define the brand. The range of finishes and the attention to detail result in a real pride of ownership. If you can actually stop listening to them, the next challenge is to try to stop looking at them!

The unique Kennerton 80mm planar magnetic carbon-fibre dynamic drivers deliver the absolute acoustic purity and offer unprecedented levels of clarity and resolution. Headphone enthusiasts around the world describe the listening experience as outstanding in terms of realism, natural sound reproduction, dynamics and clarity. Combined with their legendary wood craftmanship and finishes, these headphones are audiophile equipment of the highest class. Amazing!

Why Planar Magnetic?

Kennerton believe that the perfect headphone would be a combination of the dynamic and electrostatic technologies combined into one. Whereby taking the airy and extremely detailed sound of an electrostatic driver and combining it with the power & impact of a dynamic transducer. This would achieve a sound that’s both natural and engaging.

When they looked at the market to see what their competitors have been producing in the last couple of years, they were surprised to find that the most recent planar magnetic headphones all had the same design and thus also shared the same flaws. They perceived this observation as evidence that the 35-year old planar magnetic technology hasn’t evolved with time.

They got to the drawing board and started to make their own drivers from scratch. One of their core goals was to minimise internal structure resonances and optimise sound wave patterns in order to create a clear, low-distortion sound across all frequencies. To achieve this, they created several patent-pending core innovations. The magnetic structure of their new planar driver is designed to eliminate both unwanted resonances and unify magnetic field distribution over the total frequency range.

Kennerton Driver Technology

Kennerton drivers are solely designed and produced in Saint Petersburg, Russia, at a state-of-the-art facility that also manufactures precision components for the aerospace and military industries. This level of technology, tooling and equipment used ensures the highest quality and durability of their headphones. Their drivers feature:

  • A new 80mm planar-magnetic driver, with every aspect of this technology being implemented, such as phase coherence, flat impedance and a low-mass diaphragm.
  • Multi-layer 20 µm polyimide film diaphragm, tested to have the highest reliability and longevity in the most extreme environmental conditions.
  • FEM-Optimized Magnet System with 10 neodymium magnets arranged in symmetric push-pull configuration.
  • Unique semicircular bar magnets.
  • A semicircular form therefore has many advantages over the ordinary rectangular shaped bar magnets – it produces a more uniform magnetic field, greatly reduces internal resonances and produces an optimal sound.
  • The driver has greater sensitivity thanks to its powerful magnets and low-mass diaphragm. It can therefore be easily driven by portable devices.
  • The driver is made of super strong and light material – Carbon.

The Manufacturing Process of the Kennerton Wooden Cups

  1. All wood types used for making the headphones’ assembly and cups always undergo multiple different processes. Drying and coating methods which have antibacterial substances are used, making the cups pleasant to look at and resistant against environmental factors.
  2. The wooden cups are crafted by specific in-house developed procedures. Factors such as wood types, grain, age & design geometry all influence the sound and this knowledge & experience is implemented in these headphone designs.
  3. The cups are manufactured by 3D modelling controlled by precision machinery. The machines have the highest available accuracy and repeatable processing quality.
  4. After the milling operation, the cups are sanded and polished by hand.
  5. After sanding, the wood is coated by using special oils to protect it from humidity and prevent it from deteriorating.
  6. The cups are processed with microwaves for several minutes in order to avoid the deterioration of the oils.
  7. The cups are covered by hot bee-wax and dried in a special drying chamber for about 1.5 hours. Temperatures are set between 60 – 74 degrees centigrade depending on the type of wood.
  8. Drying is followed by the cups being cooled at room temperature for at least 6 hours.
  9. The cups are ground for the second time, hot wax is again applied, which is again followed by drying the cups at the same temperatures for about 8 hours.
  10. The closing stage of the work includes thorough polishing of the cup, laser engraving of the logo and other elements as per the design. In some cases, patina forming treatment is applied for a decorative finish that makes the surface look perfect.
  11. If the client prefers a varnish coating instead of a wax coating, we cover the product with three layers of eco-friendly, super-strong polyurethane varnish with intermediate drying and polishing of each layer. We use only the best and safest Italian materials, which are traditionally used in restoration workshops and in the manufacture of musical instruments.

Note: Each pair of headphones is one of a kind, and due to the nature of handwork, slight variations in wood grain may occur.
